Our
Story
The club’s history begins in Hackensack New Jersey in 1899 and it eventually moved in 1929 to Oradell where it has remained for the past 90+ years.
The club was founded by 12 Hackensack professional and businesspeople with the main organizers Edward Foster and Dr RS. Hallett
Hackensack had sought out one of the best. Charles H. Banks was a protégé of Seth Raynor and CB MacDonald the” Father of American Golf Architecture” and was one ofthe best of the day was hired to build the golf course. Charles Banks was renowned for his use of earthmoving equipment required to fulfill his designs, particularly the deep traps located around each green, and it was from this he got his now —famous nickname “Steam shovel.” His basic concepts came for m famous holes on courses in England and Scotland, and the placement ofthese holes on each of the courses he designed during the 1920’s. The use of these holes became a template and method of design that was initiated by C.B. MacDonald. Both of his disciples Banks and Raynor would incorporate into their course. Today these hole designs are considered “The Classics”. The eight holes that set the path of Golf Course Design were the Alps, Biarritz, Cape, Eden, Punchbowi, Redan, Road and the Short These holes are among those that form the foundation of strategic design.
Also hired was the respected clubhouse architect Clifford Wendehack to build the clubhouse who has designed many clubhouses in the area such as Winged Foot, Ridgewood and Mountain Ridge The clubhouse was constructed and opened in June 1928.
Hackensack Golf Club has hosted many events going as far back as 1931. The Club has supported and hosted event 5 from NJSGA #Open and #Amateur, MGA #Open and #Amateurs, USGA Qualifiers for Men and Women and NJ PGA Championships and Pro/Ams through the years.
